Located along the Golden Horn, Tersane İstanbul occupies a historically layered site that once served as the state shipyards of Byzantine, Ottoman and Republican eras. After the shipbuilding operations were relocated to Tuzla, this extraordinary waterfront area—situated at the heart of the city and facing the historic skyline—became the subject of a comprehensive adaptive-reuse project.

The existing building stock, shaped by centuries of continuous use, was approached with a dual strategy: structures of historical significance were preserved and restored, while new buildings were introduced in comparable scales to accommodate contemporary needs. This approach allowed the site to retain its industrial memory while opening the way for new public and cultural functions.

Within the masterplan, Tersane İstanbul brings together hotels, retail and dining venues, art galleries, museums, and generous waterfront promenades designed for social life, leisure, and cultural events such as art fairs. The hotels positioned along the water’s edge—with their infinity pools overlooking the Golden Horn—introduce a resort-like character to this once-industrial landscape, redefining the relationship between Istanbul and its shoreline.
The project transforms a historically significant zone into a vibrant urban destination, balancing heritage with contemporary experience while reconnecting the Golden Horn to the daily life of the city.
