Haus der Statistik is a transformation project located in former East Berlin, at the corner of Otto-Braun-Straße and Karl-Marx-Allee, close to Alexanderplatz. The design preserves and restores a substantial portion of the original building, while a new red structural element is added to re-establish its relationship with the city. The color of this addition is derived from a long-standing red motif on the existing façade, a reference deeply embedded in the building’s recent visual identity.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, many residents of the former East Berlin opposed the demolition of this structure. Restoring it instead of replacing it has therefore become a meaningful urban gesture, allowing the building to reconnect with today’s Berlin through a new public interface attached to the façade.
This intermediary space extends from the boulevard to the upper floors, creating a social vertical route that links public circulation with the private residential areas inside without disrupting them. The result is a sensitive reinterpretation that weaves historical continuity together with contemporary civic life.
